Melasma is a common skin condition that causes dark, discoloured patches on the skin, usually the face.
Melasma is also known as chloasma or “pregnancy mask”. The cause of Melasma is not fully understood. We do know that changes in hormones can trigger melasma during pregnancy, from taking birth control pills, hormone therapy, and sun exposure.
Medical professionals believe that melasma and hormones appear to be linked. Hormonal imbalance during pregnancy can result in discolouration or brown patches appearing on the forehead, cheeks, chin, above the upper lip, and bridge of the nose. Some can even get blotchy patches on their neck or forearms.
The extent of discolouration varies from person to person with melasma. Other causes or reasons that can influence the hyperpigmentation of your skin include:
Too much sunlight exposure
Race
Age
Pregnancy trimester
Melasma or hyperpigmentation history
